In 2015 the Yasuní association will continue its fight against oil extraction in the Yasuni National Park ITT according to Benito Bonilla, spokesman for the association, reiterating that there are no appropriate environmental conditions or techniques in order to exploit the Amazon reserve.
“In 2015 we aim to continue defending the Yasuní National Park in all cases” stated Bonilla in an interview with FM Mundo.
The activist hopes that, what with the current price drops in oil in addition to the high density and costs of crude oil extraction from the Amazon, the government may withdraw interest in obtaining these resources, considering them less profitable given the international circumstances.
However, Bonilla affirmed that next year the environmental community will continue its efforts to call for a Popular Consultation on oil exploitation in the Yasuní, and will join forces with other environmental and isolated community protection projects.
On the other hand, the spokesperson for the committee referred to 2014 as a prosperous year despite failing upon its intention to produce a Popular Consultation in order to avoid oil extraction. He believes however, that the Yasunidos project in defence of nature, gained strength and both national and international relevance during 2014.
