SUPPORT THE RIO+20 MISSION OF PLANET AMAZON IN FAVOR OF RAONI AND THE PEOPLES OF THE AMAZON

The official debates of the Rio+20 Earth Summit will be held from the 20th to the 22nd of June 2012, but from the 15th of June, date of the opening of the People's Summit (Cúpula dos Povos), and for eight days, the entire world will have a meeting at Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to discuss and decide on the future of the planet.

He was already here twenty years ago to alert us, cacique Raoni, known in the entire world for his fight in favor of the preservation of the amazonian forest, said by some to be the “green lung” of the planet, and truly intends to make his voice heard at Rio+20, even more so since most of the promises made in 1992 by the nations of the world have not been kept.

The Amazon, natural wealth vital for the planet of which the greatest part is found on the Brazilian territory, is more than ever in the center of huge economic interests. Time flies, it has therefore become necessary to support cacique Raoni's commitment, one of those which receive the largest echo internationally, if we want to push our leaders to preserve what has not yet been destroyed. Pressures need to be acted on an international scale because on the one hand the stakes go beyond the borders of Brazil and on the other many foreign companies are implied in the exploitation of the Amazon or, for example, in the projects of great dams (ex for France : Alstom, GDF-Suez..).

During the Rio+20 Summit, cacique Raoni, in the name of his people and the other native populations of Brazil and the Amazon, will come to remind that he is fighting for the survival of his people, so that the rights of the native populations to the land stop being systematically trampled, and therefore against the installation of exploitations (forest, agricultural or mineral) on the protected territories, like the plans of great dams (more than a hundred are planned in the amazonian basin for the years to come) which annihilate the lives of native populations and endanger fragile and complex ecosystems, against the revision of the Brazilian forest code which will further accelerate the process of massive deforestation.

And above all, the cacique Raoni will come to remind he is fighting for the future of the Earth, for the children on the entire world.

The association Planète Amazone (Amazon Planet) accompanies cacique Raoni in the different aspects of his fight to preserve the integrity of the amazonian forest which has seen his birth. During the different events linked to the Rio+20 Summit, we will be at his sides to favor meetings with personalities and decision-makers which we will call out through the near 350 000 signatures which his petition (that we administrate) collected. We will be assuring the media contacting and will document his interventions, in order to supply the www.raoni.com site, the social networks and other means of information in the months to come.

At Rio+20 and particularly on the occasion of the Summit of the Peoples, Planète Amazone will thread links with many native representatives, forming the basis of future partnerships. To all those who fight silently far from all eyes, in general indifference, Planète Amazone will make efforts to bring a judicial and media support.

During their trip to Brazil and if your donations allow it, the two members of Planet Amazon mandated will equally participate in a mission to the native zone of Kapot Nhinore, for a documentation and evaluation work of the situation, in the continuity of Amazon Watch's recent Xingu urgent action fund call which we have relayed in France with the support of french famous nature defender Nicolas Hulot (see here).
